Those who work in an artistic glass factory knows that beauty and perfection are attainable only by getting one’s hands dirty, people who live among powders and colours, people who breathe art and keep trying and trying again until reaching the desired result. People like Benvenuto Mastri Vetrai, the historical glass factory in Treviso that after 50 years still innovates and amazes with revolutionary works of art.
The skills obtained in glass working are proven by the countless projects in the world and in various fields: museums, mansions, yachts, boutiques and hotels all around the world.
The origins of the factory in the postwar period
The stained glass made by Benvenuto is characterized by the perfect union of three concepts: beauty, quality and functionality.
A family tradition with deep roots: during the years of World War II, both for necessity and sense of opportunity, the young Walter Benvenuto started to work in a small glass factory in Treviso. His surname will then become one thing with glass, one enriching the other. At the end of the war Walter finds a job at Maffioli in Venice, one of the biggest companies specialized in glass decoration, then later in other important factories. Walter soon understands the opportunities of the postwar period in the North east of Italy and in 1966 he establishes the company “La Posa Vetro Rapida”: taking advantage of the flourishing construction sector, the company specializes in mounting the glass windows of new buildings. Walter’s intuition is right and in a short time the company grows bigger.
Walter’s son, Vittorio, starts helping in the father’s factory since a young age, intrigued and charmed by the call of glass working. In 1975, after completing his studies, he dedicates himself completely to the family business and works with the ductility of glass to experiment and innovate. But the road to expertise is long and he knows he needs to learn all the tricks of the trade, glass working techniques established in the course of centuries. Walter will be his great resource, the bearer of knowledge and skills that would otherwise be lost. Again fortune smiles upon the family business: at that time decorated glass is in fashion, thanks also to the ideas of international designers. Vittorio and Walter rise to this new challenge: one brings out the skills gained during a long path as a decorator, the other studies new techniques and new ways to apply old working techniques to new materials and innovations.
It’s another success. Benvenuto Mastri Vetrai was born.
